One Week In

I can't believe its already been one week since we moved aboard s/v Bosco! It feels more like a month with every single day so full of great challenges, struggles and wonderful things alike. We haven't even taken her out to sail but have learned so much about her all-the-same.

Boat life is quite a change from our past 'normal-life'. One thing is that any (and seemingly every) project, large or small, will take no less than 4 or 5 hours. Well, maybe not ALL jobs, but most jobs. I managed to install non-skids on our stairs in under 5 minutes, which felt like a treat!

Patience is EXTREMELY important. Nothing is as simple as we think it should be, but sometimes things are less complicated than we imagined. Its been hard to pace ourselves because it feels like there's always so much to get done (especially since we are still moving in). Communication is very important, but I guess that's a given. The people in the sailing world are SO FRIENDLY! That is one of the best things about it by far.

There are also things that we miss about "normal" life. Running water for one. Our boat does have running water capabilities, but currently our water tank is in need of replacing. So for now we have a 7-gallon jerry jug that we fill. Then we filter that water in our little Brita container and then into 4 Nalgene water bottles. We use these for everything; cooking, cleaning, laundry, teeth brushing, etc.

We also miss having our own bathroom, toilet and shower. Currently we are replacing the old head with a composting head (which we thought would be easy), but is turning into a big "shitty" mess. :)

Using the marina facilities at The Sailing Emporium are nice. The showers, bathrooms, laundry room and library have been invaluable spaces that we are glad to have access to. But it is so much extra effort to do the mainstream things like take showers or go to the bathroom (esp. in the middle of the night!). But soon we should have a functioning bathroom space that we can use for all of these things! On the plus side, we have met some amazing people at our marina whom I hope will become long-time friends. They are all so outgoing, helpful, encouraging and high spirited...its a really nice change of pace.

We also decided that every saturday will be "Date Night" (or Date Day depending on circumstances). We hope to do lots of fun unique things on Saturdays, and ideally no boat work. Our first "Date Night" was almost an entire day of fun. We hit up the farmer's market in Chestertown to get fresh produce. We had to get back to the boat because we are having a new custom latex "master bed" installed. That night we threw a little 'pizza party' with a cheese pizza cooked on the grill and a movie on the iPad (since we don't have a TV on the boat yet).

We look forward to another busy week and getting s/v Bosco ready for our big up-and-coming journeys. We are taking her out on the water on my birthday for a docking lesson as well as a sail.
